It is common knowledge that the examination of moral intuitionism is a recurring theme in Mill’s work and meant a great deal to him personally. For example, his Autobiography reveals that Mill saw the intuitionism of his time as a major root cause of social ills, poor institutions and prejudiced practices – in short, a major obstacle to progress – which he sought to eradicate through his work (especially his more theoretical writings A System of Logic and An Examination of Sir William Hamilton’s Philosophy). Mill therefore made it his life’s work to curb the (in his view harmful) practical effects of intuitionism by attacking its philosophical foundations.
